Registered Physiotherapy

Physiotherapists are primary health care professionals with a significant role in health promotion and treatment of injury and disease. We combine in-depth knowledge of the body and how it works with specialized hands-on clinical skills to assess, diagnose, and treat symptoms of illness, injury, or disability.

Our Registered Physiotherapists (RPTs) are highly qualified to instruct functional movement and exercise, which can also be offered virtually from the comfort of your home. We also use modalities such as therapeutic laser and ultrasound, and some RPTs are trained in dry needling (IMS), custom orthotics, taping and bracing.

Initial Consultation (1 hour) – $125

One-on-one, client-centred consultation that includes an in-depth assessment and treatment planning.

Please note: This is typically required for spinal issues, ICBC cases, and anyone with multiple areas of concern.

Registered Massage Therapy

Registered massage therapy alleviates pain by encouraging fluid and energy flow in the body. Our Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) evaluate your health needs and provide an assessment and timeline of your recovery for your specific soft tissue or musculoskeletal condition. Then, your RMT manipulates the soft-tissue muscles of your body to relieve pain, rehabilitate injuries, reduce stress, increase relaxation, and aid in general health and wellness. We offer active (intense) or passive (gentle) hands-on therapy and suggest proactive care at home, such as stretches, myofascial release, and breathing and relaxation techniques.

Theralase Cold Laser Therapy (CLT)

Rossland Physio is proud to offer state-of-the-art Theralase Cold Laser Therapy (CLT) to help speed healing from acute injuries and recovery post-surgery.

The Theralase Non-Thermal Therapeutic Laser system employs class 3B lasers, which are used specifically for tissue stimulation. When laser light interacts with tissue it causes certain photochemical reactions to occur which augment the natural biological healing process. The body’s cells absorb the light and transform it into chemical energy, which the body then uses to repair its own tissue. This “bio-stimulating” effect results in decreased pain and inflammation, increased tissue regeneration, and accelerated healing.

Cold Laser Therapy can be used for a wide variety of conditions, but the most impressive results are achieved when used early in the healing process to treat acute injuries. Post-surgical pain and recovery time can also be significantly lessened with CLT. Our team will evaluate whether this treatment is a good choice for you during your consultation.

Gunn Intramuscular Stimulation (Gunn IMS)

Gunn Intramuscular Stimulation (Gunn IMS), developed by Dr. Chan Gunn, is based on the Gunn Theory of Neuropathic Pain. Gunn IMS is a form of dry needling that is extremely effective for treating muscle pain of neuropathic origin. It has nothing to do with Chinese medicine. Neuropathic Dysfunction is a condition of the muscles whereby the spinal nerve which supplies the “electrical supply” to the muscles is not communicating effectively. This can be as a result of a number of things, including:

  • Degenerative arthritis
  • Spinal disc injury
  • Old injuries and scar tissue
  • Repetitive overuse

The consequence of this miscommunication between nerve and muscle is that the muscles, over time, become shortened, weakened, pained, and unresponsive to or worsened by stretching and strengthening treatments, including those employed through physiotherapy, massage and chiropractic.

Our Gunn IMS specialists treat patients by inserting a sterilized acupuncture needle into the shortened and tender muscle bands, which causes a brief but powerful reflex muscle contraction. This reflex initiates a cascade of chemical and electrical reactions within the tissue which act to:

  • Re-program: the nerve-to-muscle communication gets re-established.
  • Restore: the muscle tissue returns to a healthy state.
  • Recover: the muscle will now respond to stretching & strengthening.

RPT Sandi Jewell will evaluate whether this treatment is a good choice for you during your consultation.

Custom Orthotics

Custom orthotics can be a game-changer for patients with foot/ankle/knee and even hip and lower back problems. Matched with exercises to strengthen and stretch muscles, which are key to optimal lower body alignment and gait, custom orthotics provide support and correction as well as reduce ground impact forces. This results in improved alignment and biomechanics, reduced foot and leg fatigue, and consequently increased stamina for weight-bearing activities. We specialize in fitting our patients with custom orthotics for increased comfort and performance.

Custom Orthotics Consultation – $100

One-one, client-centered consultation that includes evaluation of alignment, lower body biomechanics, and evaluation of gait and impressions.

Custom Orthotic Inserts – $450

Includes a short fitting appointment to ensure your custom inserts give you optimal performance.

These services are direct-billable through most extended medical plans. Please check your health plan to confirm coverage details for orthotic inserts.

What People Are Saying

I’m a big believer in ‘alternative’ treatments. I’ve been seeing chiropractors, acupuncturists, massage therapists and physiotherapists for years, and usually with positive results. But sometimes you have an issue that just does not cooperate, no matter what treatment you seek. That’s when I found Sandi and her IMS treatment. I’m not a big fan of needles (read: chicken) but Sandi explained the process and, much to my surprise, it was completely ‘doable!’ The results were nothing short of amazing and a few treatments had me feeling much better. I still book in a few times a year for a ‘tune-up.’ I highly recommend Sandi; she’s professional, personable, and effective—what more can you ask for?

My wife and I met Sandi at an 8-week back and core strengthening/stretching course, presented as part of Trail’s winter programs a number of years back. The knowledge she passed on while teaching that course was second to none, including university professors I’ve been exposed to. Sandi’s knowledge of anatomy and physiology was truly on the mark and actually revelational. I subsequently developed frozen shoulder symptoms and her exercise regime allowed me to get back to normal in exceptional time. Again, her anatomical knowledge contributed greatly to the exercises she recommended and to my successful recovery. We highly recommend her!

Gord and Marion FischerTrail, British Columbia

After struggling with chronic low back and pelvic pain for a number of years and with my pain becoming increasingly frequent and completely debilitating, I began seeing Sandi for Gunn IMS treatments in the spring of 2017. With a fairly extensive background in human kinetics, various movement therapies, and yoga, I was still finding that my knowledge and the exercises designed to support my body were no longer effective. I had seen a number of practitioners but had no long lasting relief. I wasn’t open to taking the pharmaceutical drug route to treat my pain. After Sandi assessed me, she deemed me a good candidate for Gunn IMS to address the neurologically rooted movement dysfunction that was preventing me from progressing to pain-free, healthy movement patterns. Sandi has a very healing presence and touch, and within less than eight treatments, I was beginning to regain function and move with significantly less pain. I also found rehabilitation exercises were now effective at bringing the appropriate amount of strength and relaxation to my body. Healing my body has been and still is an ongoing journey, and Sandi's treatments were, without a doubt, a huge catalyst. She helped put me on a path to bringing my body towards its natural healing state.
